Choosing a CV builder shouldn't require a PhD. You need to know: what does it cost, what can it do, and will they hold your resume hostage behind a paywall?
This is a straightforward comparison of the leading CV and cover letter builders: JobSprout, Rezi, Kickresume, Zety, Enhancv and Novorésumé.
No marketing fluff. Just the facts that matter when you're trying to land your next job.
Who wrote this: JobSprout publishes this comparison and JobSprout is one of the six tools in it, so read our own entry with that in mind. Every competitor price below links to that company's own pricing page, checked on 31 August 2026. Where a company runs regional or cohort pricing and we could not pin one figure, we say "around" rather than invent precision.
What we actually know about resumes
Most comparison articles have opinions. We have a corpus. These figures come from the JobSprout Resume Index, measured on 18 August 2026 across 2,366 real resumes and 27,100 work-experience bullet points, published as an open CC-BY dataset:
29.7% of work-experience bullet points contain a number. Seven in ten say what someone was responsible for and never what changed.
Resumes that quantify score higher on everything else. Mean ATS score runs 60 for resumes with no quantified bullets and 76 for those with half or more. That 16-point gap holds even when you exclude the category that grades quantification directly, so it is not circular.
Short resumes score worst. Under 250 words averages 57, 250 to 399 averages 68, 400 to 599 averages 72. The "keep it to one page" advice is doing damage.
The median resume is 327 words, three roles, four bullets per role, seventeen skills, and scores 67 out of 100.
These are associations across resumes, not proof that editing one thing moves your score. We publish the method and the sample sizes so you can check us.
The practical read: the tool matters less than whether it pushes you to put numbers in your bullets. Judge the six below partly on that.
JobSprout at $9.99/week or $19.99/month (or $84/year, $129 once)
Novorésumé at ~$20/month
Kickresume at $24/month
Zety at ~$24/month (but no free downloads)
Enhancv at ~$25/month (or ~$13/month on 6-month plan)
Most Expensive:
Rezi at $29/month (or $149 lifetime)
Lifetime Options:
JobSprout: $129 lifetime
Rezi: $149 lifetime
Everyone else: subscription only
2. Download Restrictions: The Hidden Gotcha
Many builders let you build for "free" then charge to download. Here's the truth:
Truly Unlimited Free Downloads:
JobSprout (unlimited free PDF downloads)
Kickresume (unlimited PDFs, basic templates only on free)
Severely Limited:
Zety (build for free, pay to download. The classic bait-and-switch)
Rezi (max 3 PDFs total. That's lifetime, not monthly)
Enhancv (7-day trial only, all downloads watermarked until you pay)
Novorésumé (1-page only, no premium content)
3. AI Writing: Precision vs. Generation
There are two philosophies:
Surgical/Precise AI (you stay in control):
JobSprout: Select any text from a single word to entire sections. Choose tone, length, style. Plus one-click job tailoring: paste a job description and AI rewrites your CV to match the role, with a word-level diff preview so you see every change. The AI Assistant knows your CV, work history, and target role. No more copying your CV into ChatGPT and re-explaining your situation every time.
Rezi: Bullet-level editing with ATS focus and keyword optimization.
Broad Auto-Generation (AI writes for you):
Kickresume: Entire resume from job title, AI bullet suggestions.
Zety: Pre-written phrases and step-by-step wizard with AI suggestions.
Novorésumé: Has AI writing assistance for content improvement and suggestions.
4. Cover Letters: What's Actually Included?
This is where free plans really diverge:
Free Plan Includes Cover Letters:
JobSprout: ✅ Yes, with full AI and unlimited PDF downloads
Kickresume: ⚠️ 4 basic templates with unlimited downloads, but AI generation requires Premium
Limited/Watermarked:
Enhancv: Cover letters available but watermarked (7-day trial only)
Free Plan Does NOT Include Cover Letters:
Rezi: Pro plan required
Zety: Payment required
Novorésumé: Premium plan required
Key Insight: JobSprout offers the most complete free cover letter experience with full AI assistance. Kickresume has basic templates but locks AI behind Premium. Enhancv watermarks free downloads. Everyone else requires payment.
5. The Typesetting Difference
Only one platform uses professional typesetting instead of basic HTML/CSS:
JobSprout uses Typst, a modern typesetting system similar to LaTeX. This means:
Mathematical precision in spacing and layout
Perfect kerning (letter spacing) and line spacing
Professional, print-quality output
The visual quality of LaTeX without the learning curve
Everyone else uses HTML/CSS rendering, which works well but doesn't achieve the same professional typesetting quality.
Why this matters: In competitive hiring, visual quality signals attention to detail. A professionally typeset CV stands out in a pile of 100+ applications.
6. ATS (Applicant Tracking System) Compatibility
All platforms claim to be "ATS-friendly," but some go further:
Built-in ATS Tools:
JobSprout: Free ATS checker (no sign-up) with a 0 to 100 score and one-click fixes, plus ATS-safe templates by design
Rezi: "Rezi Score" for ATS performance, keyword targeting (strongest job-description match focus)
Kickresume: ATS checker (Pro plan)
Zety: ATS-friendly templates, keyword suggestions
Enhancv: ATS check tool (Pro only), but creative templates may cause parsing issues
Novorésumé: Free ATS checker, AI content suggestions
Caution: Enhancv's design-heavy templates with charts, icons, and creative sections may not parse well with older ATS systems. Their Pro ATS checker helps, but visual elements can still cause issues.

What Makes JobSprout Different
We built JobSprout around four core beliefs:
Professional typesetting matters. Your CV should look like it was professionally typeset, not thrown together in Word. That's why we use Typst.
AI should know your context. Other tools make you re-explain your situation every time. JobSprout's AI Assistant knows your CV, work history, and target role. Our one-click job tailoring lets you paste a job description and tailor your entire CV in seconds, with a word-level diff showing exactly what changed. Want to check grammar or make a section more confident? Just ask. This is what "AI that assists" actually looks like.
No download hostage-taking. Once you create your CV, you should be able to download it as many times as you need. No tricks, no limits.
Your CV should have a home online. A file gets attached and forgotten. JobSprout can publish your CV as a hosted personal website at a jobsprout.me address, free, so you have one link to share and recruiters can find you when they search your name.
If that resonates with you, try JobSprout. It's free to start, and you won't hit a paywall when you try to download.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best AI resume builder in 2026?
It depends on what you are optimising for. JobSprout is our pick for document quality and controllable AI, because edits are shown as a diff you approve rather than applied silently, and the free tier exports unlimited PDFs. Rezi is stronger if keyword matching against a job description is your single priority. Kickresume is the better buy if you want interview prep and mobile apps in the same subscription. We publish this comparison and we are in it, so weigh our own entry accordingly.
Which AI resume builders are actually free?
Free means different things per tool. JobSprout and Kickresume both allow unlimited PDF downloads without paying, though Kickresume restricts the free tier to four basic templates and no AI writing. Rezi's free plan caps you at three PDF downloads in total, for the lifetime of the account. Zety lets you build for free but requires payment to download. Enhancv's free output carries its branding.
Do AI-written resumes get rejected by ATS systems?
Applicant tracking systems do not detect or penalise AI authorship. They parse structure. What gets a resume filtered is unparseable formatting: multi-column layouts, text inside images, tables used for positioning, and non-standard section headings. The risk with AI writing is not the ATS, it is that generic output reads as generic to the human who opens it next.
Does adding numbers to a resume actually help?
Measurably, yes. In the JobSprout Resume Index, measured across 2,366 resumes on 18 August 2026, resumes with no quantified bullet points averaged an ATS score of 60, while those with half or more averaged 76. The gap holds even after excluding the category that grades quantification directly. Only 29.7% of real work-experience bullet points contain any number at all, which makes it one of the cheapest improvements available.
How long should a resume be?
Longer than the folklore suggests. The same dataset shows resumes under 250 words averaging 57 out of 100, those between 250 and 399 averaging 68, and those between 400 and 599 averaging 72. The median real resume runs 327 words across three roles. Cutting to one page at the cost of your evidence is usually the wrong trade.
