Writing a CV for marketing applications requires demonstrating that you can drive measurable results. Marketing hiring managers want to see metrics - traffic growth, ROAS, CAC, conversion rates - not vague claims about "building brand awareness."
Digital marketing continues to grow. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, marketing manager roles are projected to grow 6% between 2022 and 2032. The shift to digital has created demand for marketers who can demonstrate ROI.
This guide breaks down exactly what marketing recruiters look for, with a detailed example.
What Marketing Hiring Managers Look For
Marketing hiring is metrics-driven. Based on industry hiring practices and insights from marketing leaders, here is what gets evaluated:
1. Quantified Results
This is where marketing CVs succeed or fail. Every bullet should have a number:
"Managed social media campaigns" tells a hiring manager nothing. "Grew Instagram engagement from 2.1% to 2.8%, driving 18% of new customer acquisitions" tells them exactly what you can deliver.
2. Channel Expertise
Marketing is increasingly specialised. Hiring managers look for depth in specific channels:
Paid media: Meta Ads, Google Ads, TikTok, programmatic
Organic: SEO, content marketing, social media
Email: Lifecycle, promotional, automation
Emerging: Influencer, affiliate, podcast
Generalists are valuable, but specialists often command higher salaries. Be clear about where your expertise lies.
3. Budget Management
Budget responsibility signals seniority:
Spend managed: "$620K annual marketing budget"
Team size: "Manage team of 2 specialists plus 6 freelancers"
Revenue responsibility: "Performance marketing for $8M annual revenue"
Marketing runs on technology. Hiring managers look for:
Analytics: Google Analytics 4, Mixpanel, Amplitude
Advertising: Meta Business Suite, Google Ads, TikTok Ads Manager
SEO: Semrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog
Email: Klaviyo, HubSpot, Mailchimp
Reporting: Google Data Studio, Tableau, Looker
Name the specific tools you have used. "Analytics experience" is vague. "GA4, Semrush, and Klaviyo" is specific.
5. Portfolio and Case Studies
Marketing is a show-me field:
Portfolio links in your header
Campaign case studies
Published work or content samples
Awards and recognition
A hiring manager who can see your work will weight your application higher.
CV Structure for Marketing Applications
Marketing CVs follow a specific structure. Here is what the template demonstrates:
Contact Information (including portfolio link)EducationProfessional ExperiencePortfolio and CampaignsAwardsSkills (grouped by channel)Certifications
Why This Structure Works
Education comes first. For marketing roles, a communications or marketing degree establishes foundational knowledge. Include relevant coursework and leadership roles.
Experience is metrics-focused. Each role should include budget managed, channels owned, and results achieved.
Portfolio deserves prominence. Include a portfolio link in your header and a dedicated section for notable campaigns.
Skills are grouped by channel. Paid media, organic, and analytics skills grouped separately help hiring managers assess fit.
Certifications add credibility. Google Analytics, Meta Blueprint, and HubSpot certifications validate platform expertise.
Real Example: Marketing Manager CV
Let us analyse a marketing manager CV that demonstrates every principle discussed above.
What Makes This CV Work
Marketing CVs live and die by metrics. This one delivers. Every bullet has a number: "147% YoY organic traffic growth," "$620K annual budget," "3.2x average ROAS." If you cannot measure it, do not mention it.
The creative-cv template is the right choice here. Marketing managers need to show they understand visual communication, and the template signals that without being over the top.
Experience comes before education because nobody in marketing cares where you went to school after your first job. What they care about is whether you can drive results.
The skills section balances channels (SEO, paid social, email) with tools (GA4, Semrush, Klaviyo). A good marketing manager needs both. The copywriting mention is smart too. Most marketing managers write, and mentioning it shows you are not just a dashboard jockey.

Common Mistakes in Marketing CVs
1. No Metrics
Weak: "Managed social media accounts and created content."
Strong: "Grew Instagram engagement from 2.1% to 2.8%. Content strategy drove 18% of new customer acquisitions at 60% lower CAC than paid channels."
Marketing is measured. If you cannot quantify your impact, hiring managers assume there was none.
2. Listing Responsibilities Instead of Results
Weak: "Responsible for paid social advertising campaigns."
Strong: "Managed $2.1M annual paid media spend across Meta, Google, and TikTok. Achieved 3.2x average ROAS, exceeding agency benchmark of 2.5x."
Job descriptions list responsibilities. CVs should list what you accomplished.
3. No Portfolio Link
Weak: No way to see your work
Strong: Portfolio link in header, campaign case studies in dedicated section
Marketing is a show-me field. Make it easy for hiring managers to see your work.
4. Generic Tool Claims
Weak: "Experience with marketing analytics tools."
Strong: "GA4, Semrush, Ahrefs, Klaviyo, Google Data Studio"
Name the specific tools. Marketing hiring managers often filter for specific platform experience.
5. Ignoring Budget Scale
Weak: "Managed marketing campaigns."
Strong: "Managed $620K annual budget across paid social, search, influencer, email, and affiliate channels."
Budget responsibility signals seniority. Include it.
